Echinochloa pyramidalis (Lam.) Hitchc. & Chase is an African grass with C4 photosynthesis, high biomass production, and high vegetative propagation that is tolerant to grazing and able to grow in flooded and dry conditions. Thus, it is highly invasive in tropical freshwater marshes where it is intentionally planted by ranchers to increase cattle production. This invasion is reducing plant biodiversity by increasing the invader''s aerial coverage, changing wetland hydrology and causing soil physicochemical changes such as vertical accretion. Reducing the dominance of this species and increasing the density of native wetland species is a difficult, expensive, and time-consuming process. We applied a series of disturbance treatments aimed at eliminating E. pyramidalis and recovering the native vegetation of a partially invaded freshwater marsh. Treatments included physical (cutting, soil disking, transplanting individuals of the key native species Sagittaria lancifolia subsp. media (Micheli) Bogin, and/or reducing light with shade mesh) and/or chemical (spraying Round-Up™ herbicide) disturbances. At the end of the experiment, four of the five treatments used were effective in increasing the cover and biomass of native species and reducing that of E. pyramidalis. The combination of these treatments should be used to generate a proposal for the restoration of tropical wetlands invaded by non-native grasses. A promising treatment is using soil disked to soften the soil and destroy belowground structures such as roots and rhizomes. This treatment would be more promising if combined with the use of shade cloth. If it is desirable not to impact the soil or if there is not enough budget to make an effort to include active restoration disking soil, the use of shade cloth will suffice, although the recovery of native vegetation will be slower. 相似文献

对我国沿海3个含油盆地-珠江口、北部湾和渤海湾盆地下第三系湖相生油岩中的微体化石群进行比较分析。3个盆地中以渤海湾盆地下第三系湖相化石群最为丰富,数量多,分异度高,而且化石群以地方性属种比例高、咸水类型多,存在“海源陆生生物化石”为特征;北部湾盆地,在涠洲组和流沙港组发现较多的介形类化石及个别腹足类和轮藻化石;而珠江口下经三系湖相地层中,微体化石罕见,只在个别层位发现贝壳碎片。据化石群特征,推测渤海湾盆地早第三纪是封闭型的咸水湖泊,而且部分沉积时期,可能是以Cl^-和Na^ 为主的咸水湖泊;珠江口盆地早第三纪是湖水矿化度低、硬度、pH值也低的淡水湖泊;而北部湾盆地早第三纪可能仍属淡水湖泊,但有一定的矿化度。 相似文献

A new species of planktonic dinoflagellate, Prorocentrum arabianum isolated from the Gulf of Oman, is described using both scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and light microscopy. This clonal isolate has the following morphological characteristics: (1) cell shape is asymmetric; (2) thecal surface is rugose, covered with small poroids; (3) periflagellar area is unornamented, and (4) intercalary band is horizontally striated. Analysis of P. arabianum confirms the production of one cytotoxic compound and one ichthyotoxic compound. P. arabianum is the second known toxic planktonic Prorocentroid dinoflagellate. 相似文献

Convoluta convoluta (Abildgaard 1806) is a small (2-3 mm long) acoellous turbellarian flatworm from Europe that has invaded the Gulf of Maine within the last 5 years. Although it has been reported in densities of up to 19 individuals/cm2, its ecological impact remains unknown. In its native habitat, it consumes harpacticoid copepods and primary settling mussels <0.5-mm shell length. This study estimated the impact of C. convoluta on juvenile blue mussel populations (Mytilus edulis Linnaeus 1758) around the Isles of Shoals in the southern Gulf of Maine, USA as well as looking at their distribution in their new habitat. We surveyed worm densities at sites of differing wave exposure over three substrates (hard substrates, bladed algae, filamentous algae) to quantify patterns of worm abundance. We found worms on all substrate types with their highest abundances occurring in areas of maximal sunlight exposure and minimal physical disturbance. We showed a definite pattern of consumption of mussels in the lab and found C. convoluta to consume up to 35% of primary settling mussels in the field, but only under certain conditions. Per capita impact on juvenile mussels was found to vary greatly in correlation with mussel recruitment rate and water temperature, but not with the consumption of harpacticoids. Our results also suggested that per capita interaction strength was reduced by intraspecific density-dependent competition and water temperature. The overall impact of C. convoluta on mussel populations in the southern Gulf of Maine is therefore estimated to be minimal. 相似文献

Atlantic Herring is a keystone species in several marine ecosystems, supporting intensive fisheries as well as many predators including seabirds. Biomass of this stock in eastern North America has declined considerably in recent years, potentially putting at risk populations of its predators. Although adult survival in seabirds is considered robust to moderate changes in food availability, it is also the life‐history component most critical to sustaining populations of long‐lived birds. To investigate the possibility that Atlantic Puffin survival has been affected by reduced abundance of its main prey, we analysed the encounter histories of 2999 Atlantic Puffins ringed on Machias Seal Island to estimate annual adult survival for the years 1999–2011 and assess trends in survival and the effects of several biological and environmental covariates. Features of Puffin biology and resighting procedures likely to introduce heterogeneity into our resighting probabilities were accounted for and models of survival were assessed using standard methods. We used the variance components procedure in Program MARK and survival estimates from a time‐varying model to estimate the process variance (biological variation in survival) accounted for by suspected covariates of survival. Two proxies of food availability each explained more than half of the variation in annual survival: fishery landings of Atlantic Herring (52%) and per cent (by mass) of 1‐group Herring in the diet of Puffin chicks (51%). In addition to these proxies, May sea‐surface temperature accounted for 37% of variance in survival, but winter values of North Atlantic Oscillation showed no effect. Of those parameters of Puffin biology examined, chick growth rate explained 19% of the process variance in annual survival; laying date, fledging condition and fledging date all explained no variance. A decline in fishery landings of Herring since the early 1990s, and a concurrent decline in adult Puffin survival, reinforces concern for the health of the population of Herring, a keystone forage fish in this region, and of the community of marine predators in the Gulf of Maine that rely on Herring for their survival and reproduction. 相似文献
